Evidence

Pre-1600 Scottish Gaelic Evidence (from documents written using Gaelic orthography)

The 1467 manuscript, a collection of genealogies of Scottish Gaelic families written in Ireland by a Scottish Gael and dated 1467 A.D., gives "Somairle" as the fifth man named (i.e., the fifth generation or great-great-grandfather) in the genealogy of Clann Somairle. A man named "Somairle" also appears in the genealogy of Clann Domhnaill (the number of generations could not be determined). [1467 MS]

Pre-1600 Scottish Gaelic Evidence (from documents written in Gaelic but using Scots orthography)

As yet, no pre-1600 Scottish Gaelic examples of the name have been found in documents written in Gaelic but using Scots orthography.

Pre-1600 Irish Gaelic Evidence

From the Annals of the Four Masters, names of Scottish Gaels and Scottish-Irish Gaels (relatively recently descended from Scottish Gaels who had moved their primary residence/activity to Ireland and who were still closely tied to their Scottish family [Clann Dómhnaill])**:

C M1365.8 Somairle mac Eoin Duibh Meic Domhnaill (tighearna Insi Gall, & ardconsubal Cuigidh Uladh)
E M1551.6 Somhairle Buidhe Mac Domhnaill
E M1577.5 Domhnall mac Somhairle Buidhe mic Alaxandair, mic Eóin Cathanaigh mic Mec Domhnaill
E M1582.30 Maire inghen Chuinn I Neill, ben t-Somhairle Buidhe Mec Domhnaill
F M1590.12 Somhairle Buidhe, mac Alastrainn, mic Eóin Cathanaigh Mhec Domnaill
E M1586.6 Alasdrann mac Somhairle Buidhe, mic Alastrainn, mic Eóin Chathánaigh mac Mec Domhnaill na h-Alban

**Somhairle Buidhe is a descendant of the Lord of the Isles (Munro, Table 3, note 9) who apparently acquired a lordship in Antrim and settled there. His father Alaxandair seems to have been at least primarily Scottish based, although Alaxandair's mother was Irish. (Somhairle Buidhe's mother was Scottish.) (Munro, Table 3)

Pre-1600 Latin Evidence from Ireland

Pre-1600 English Language Evidence from Ireland

(To be included if found.)

Modern Scottish Gaelic Evidence

(To be included if found.)

Conclusions
