As yet, no pre-1600 Scottish Gaelic examples of the name have been found written in standard Gaelic orthography.

Pre-1600 Latin Evidence from Scotland

"His son David de Hastinges married Forflissa or Fernelith, countess of Atholl, and succeeded in her right to the earldom in 1242 (Inchaffray, p. 4, 265)." (Black, s.n. HASTINGS) . <Forflissa> appears to be a more heavily Latinized form. The <n> in <Fernelith> appears to be a mistranscription of documentary <u>, used here with the value of <v>. Feruelith was probably a Gael, or perhaps dual culture.

"Forvelech or Forveleth (c and t are easily confused in old MSS., as they are much alike in form), daughter of Alwyn, second earl of Levenax, wife of Norrinus de Monnorgund, 1271-73 (RMP., p. 191, 198)" (Black, s.n. FORVELETH). It is not clear whether this woman was a Gael.

Pre-1600 Scots Language Evidence

"Forveleth, daughter of the late Finlay of Campsie, was found one of the heirs of deceased Dufgall, borther of Maldouen, earl of Lennox, 1271 (Red. Bk. Menteith, II, p. 218)" (Black, s.n. FORVELETH). This particular spelling may be post-1600.

<Forbflaith> is found in two Irish annals as the name of the same Irish woman in AD 775 and 780. See the entry for Forbflaith in the Index of Names in Irish Annals for specific citations. (O'Brien INIA, s.n. Forbflaith)
