Reaney & Wilson and Bardsley do not agree on the meaning of the byname Slipper.
"A derivative of ME slipe 'to polish, sharpen', probably a sword-sharpener." (Reaney & Wilson, p. 414 s.n. Slipper)
"(1) Occup. 'the slipper,' i. e. a maker of sword-slips (v. Swordslipper), an important craft in its day. (2) Nick. 'the sleeper,' a dull, heavy, sleepy sort of a fellow." (Bardsley, pp. 696-697 s.n. Slipper)
