Corker | |||||
"A derivative of ME cork 'a purple or red dye-stuff', one who sells purple dye; or synonymous with (William) le Corklittster 1279 MESO(Y), a dyer of cloth with 'cork'." (Reaney & Wilson, p. 110 s.n. Corker) It is worth noting that Bardsley (p. 204 s.n. Corker) gives the meaning of this name as "'the calker,' one who calked tubs." However, Bardsley lists no examples of this name before 1549 and shows now examples of the consonant shift which would support corker for calker. | |||||
