Brusebat | |||||
Bardsley does not give a meaning for this name. However, given its structure, it is obvious that -bat is some sort of weapon or tool. Reaney & Wilson (p. 69 s.n. Bruiser) says, "OFr bruiser 'to break'" and (p. 32 s.n. Batt), "OE batt 'a cudgel'" when discussing the possible etymology of other names. Taken together, this information leads me to believe that this byname means 'break bat/cudgel'. | |||||
