Blades | |||||
"Metonymic for Blader or Bladesmith." (Reaney & Wilson, p. 47 s.n. Blades) Bardsley (p. 108 s.n. Blades) gives this byname as deriving from a compound personal name and cites Gilbert Bladewine (1273) to show patronymic bynames with a protheme that could be an origin for a byname of Blades. It's entirely possible that byname forms such as Blades could derive from either origin and it would not be possible to tell simply from the byname citation which byname came from which origin. | |||||
