Naming Practices in 16th Century Gloucestershire:
Use of More than One Byname or Surname

In all cases in these records, all records that include more than one surname or byname for a single person fall into two categories: "Alias" Style Surnames and True Locatives. There are no examples of unmarked double surnames in these records.

I have compiled a list of the Spellings of Locations found in records in the Registers of St. Mary's, Dymock, between 1538 & 1600/01.

"Alias" Style Surnames

These are cases where a person seems to be known by two different surnames and these are documentary attempts at recording that fact. They seem to fall into two groups: (1) a surname and what seems to be a literal occupation or literal locative, and (2) two inherited surnames. Some of the entries that fall into the second category are obviously cases of children born of parents who were not married. The two names thus shown are each parent’s surname.

True Locatives

[Note: These examples are taken from Dymock only. I did not check other parishes for instances of true locatives.]

These are cases where the entry seems to be a documentary form indicating a true locative; that is the "of" or "de" phrase is literal – the person likely comes from that place.

There is one instance of a true locative and no surname. That is:
