These names are recorded using the Spanish sixteenth century orthography designed to write indigenous languages in Mexico and Central America. Pronunciations for characters in this orthography are listed below.
The vowels:

| e | like English long a, but not diphthongized |
| I | \ee\ as in peek |
| o | \oh\ as in poke |
| u | \oo\ as in new |
| ay | like English long i (in why) |
| au | \ow\ as in how |
Doubled vowels are longer in duration; that is, you draw out the vowel sound a little, compared to the single vowel.
The consonants are more or less as in normal modern Spanish, except:

| k | is pronounced a little further back in your mouth than c, which is like English c/k |
