This is a description of the Navarrese found in the Pilgrim's Guide to Santiago de Compostela (in the Codex Calixtinus), and is from the 12th century. The "Scotorum" refered to may, in fact, be Irish rather than Scottish.

This shouldn't need saying, but I've learned from past experience: This is not a description of a belted plaid or kilt of any kind! Not all male skirts are kilts!

Original MS.

Unfortunately, at the moment I don't know where the original manuscript(s) may be found.

Vielliard, Jeanne, ed., Le Guide du Pelerin de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, 5 ed. (Macon: Protat, 1978). (1 Jan 2000 )

Transcription of the original Latin:
"Navarri pannis nigris et curtis usque ad genua tantummodo, Scotorum more, induuntur." (p. 28)

My thanks to Lucy K. Pick for calling my attention to this source.

Gerson, Paula Lieber, The Pilgrim's Guide to Santiago de Compostela (Harvey Miller, 1994). (1 Jan 2000 )

English translation:
"The Navarrese wear short black garments extending just down to the knee, like the Scots." (p. 73)

My thanks to Lucy K. Pick for calling my attention to this source.
